Amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the United States has taken a proactive role in providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it had successfully airlifted over 54,000 pounds (24.5 metric tons) of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. This delivery included vital medical supplies, as well as food and nutrition aid, which are urgently needed by the war-ravaged population.
A U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft facilitated the secure transportation of supplies to Egypt. Subsequently, these supplies will be transported overland into Gaza and distributed by various United Nations (U.N.) agencies active in the region.
In addition to this recent airlift, the U.S. has executed multiple flights in the past week, delivering more than 500,000 pounds of food assistance to the residents of Gaza. These actions form part of a broader initiative aimed at mitigating the severe humanitarian conditions in the area, where access to essential resources such as fuel, water, and food has become increasingly limited due to the ongoing conflict.
The extended ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has not only provided a temporary respite from violence but has also created an opportunity for hostage releases. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby emphasized that the U.S. is committed to securing the release of all hostages held by Hamas. The extension of the truce allows for negotiations and efforts to ensure the freedom of an additional 20 hostages.
Kirby stressed that the safe return of all hostages remains a top priority for the U.S. government. While the extended ceasefire is a positive step, the U.S. will not rest until all hostages are freed from captivity.
