Meghan Markle is suddenly appropriating the late Queen’s mantra, according to a report from The Daily Mail. While the 41-year-old was with her husband Prince Harry at the Ziegfeld Ballroom for the Ms. Foundation for Women’s 50th-anniversary event, the Duchess of Sussex gave an inspirational speech intended for young and old women.
It was the first public appearance of the couple since they missed King Charles III’s coronation. The royal family has been at odds with the estranged couple for years. The tension has recently become thicker after the couple launched a documentary about the royal family that was reportedly riddled with unverifiable information.
Nevertheless, the pair remains active in their public life. Markle stole the Queen’s favorite saying at the event and told the crowd that they can lead a life with “daily acts of service.” She also repeated the sentiment in February 2021 at Buckingham Palace when it was confirmed that she and her husband will step down as royals. Markle claimed the universality of service, suggesting that she can give back regardless of whether she is a royal or not.
Service is a key theme in the royal family. In 1947, during her 21st birthday, Queen Elizabeth II gave a speech saying that whether she lives for a short time or a long time she will be devoted to the service of her people and her imperial family.
Prince William also spoke of Charles’ “service,” saying that that is the meaning behind the pageantry of the event. He said that his father had committed himself to serving the country.
The event was marked by more than just words, however, the duchess was given the Women of Vision Award for empowering women around the world. The couple was accompanied by Markle’s mother Doria Ragland.
Markle’s nearly $2,000 gold dress also made headlines, but many noted that Princess Kate Middleton wore it better.
