Get Married, Have Kids — Family First Blast Stuns Beltway

Government official speaking at a press conference in front of the White House

A Trump cabinet secretary just told young Americans that chasing careers over family is “the dumbest advice they could ever get” — and the media meltdown was instant.

Story Snapshot

  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged Americans to seek love, get married, and have “lots of kids.”
  • Duffy said modern culture pushing young people away from family is “the most foolish advice imaginable.”[1]
  • He and his wife point to their own family of eight children as proof that big families bring joy.[8]
  • Liberal media critics attacked his remarks as outdated and unrealistic in today’s economy.[1][9]

Duffy’s Message: Love, Marriage, and “Lots of Kids” Give Life Real Purpose

At Donald Trump’s Great State Fair kickoff rally on the National Mall, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy did something Washington leaders almost never do anymore. He told young Americans that the secret to a meaningful life is not climbing a corporate ladder or chasing internet fame. He said the advice to avoid marriage and children is “the most foolish advice imaginable” and urged them to “look for love, get married and have lots of kids.”[1][2]

Duffy said that what truly feeds the human spirit is the pursuit of love, not endless self-focus. He told the crowd that marriage and family are where people find real “purpose and fulfillment in life,” not in chasing one more promotion or one more side hustle.[3][5] Fox News clips of the speech highlighted his simple line: “Get married and have lots of kids,” framing it as his “advice to all Americans” at a time when many young people feel lost and lonely despite having more material comfort than any past generation.[5][7]

Living the Message: A Cabinet Secretary with Eight Kids and Pro-Family Policy

Duffy and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, are not just talking about family values as a slogan. They have eight children and have spoken for years about how their large family shapes their lives and their politics.[8][18] In a past national convention speech, they described raising a big family as both hard work and a deep joy, and used their own home as an example that strong families can thrive even while serving in public life.[8]

Inside the Department of Transportation, Duffy has pushed that same pro-family focus into actual policy. A recent directive ordered that transportation programs be judged by how they benefit families and communities, not just raw traffic counts or bureaucratic checkboxes.[1] His “Make Travel Family Friendly Again” campaign directs one billion dollars in airport funding toward family-friendly spaces, including better seating, play areas, and healthier food options for parents and kids trying to travel together.[5][6] For many conservatives, this looks like the federal government finally remembering that real people, with real kids, use these systems every day.

Backlash from the Left: Career First, Family Later — If Ever

Left-leaning outlets reacted fast to Duffy’s advice, calling it outdated, unfocused, or tone-deaf to young adults who feel priced out of marriage and children.[1][9] Commenters on social media argued that housing costs, student debt, and childcare prices make large families unrealistic, and they accused Duffy of ignoring those pressures. Some critics tied their attacks to separate ethics complaints and a reality show about his family, suggesting his pro-family message is just another partisan branding exercise.[4][9][14]

Yet even those critics did not offer hard data that proved Duffy wrong on the deeper claim that love and family are a main source of meaning in life.[1] Much of the backlash focused on political motives, sponsor lists for his television project, or general anger at the Trump administration, rather than serious evidence that strong families fail to help communities. At the same time, scholars across the spectrum admit that “family values” talk has played a central role in American politics for decades because voters instinctively connect family strength with national strength.[19][20][21]
