(RoyalPatriot.com )- The spokeswoman for President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine confirmed on Monday that a request for a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin was rejected, as tension between the countries increases.
President Vladimir Putin continues to threaten Ukraine in the run-up to a Parliamentary election, with many speculating that his aggressive tone and messages towards the country are part of an effort to rally the Russian people behind his party’s parliamentary candidates.
“The Kremlin of course, has the request to talk to Vladimir Putin,” Iuliia Mendel said to The Associated Press. “We haven’t received a response so far and very much hope that it’s not a refusal of dialogue.”
The request for a phone call with President Putin was made on March 26, after four members of the Ukrainian military were killed in a mortar blast.
But Russia denies that any request for a phone call was even made, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirming that same day that they had not received any such request “in recent days.”
Kyiv said that pro-Russia separatists were responsible for the mortar attacks, and have targeted Ukrainian military officials in eastern Ukraine with machine guns and grenade launchers. The incident was the worst loss of life to occur in the region in three years and ends the ceasefire that has been in place since July of last year.
On Monday, the number of Ukrainian military personnel killed rose to 28 since the beginning of this year, following an increase in the number of Russian troops stationed along the border of Ukraine.
President Zelensky is expected to travel to Paris shortly to begin discussions on escalations with Russia with French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to Mendel, Russia has increased the number of troops on the eastern border to 41,000, with a further 42,000 stationed in Crimea. The Ukrainian spokeswoman also said that Russian troops “keep arriving.”
Russia has long defended its militaristic aggression by saying it is free to deploy troops anywhere on its territory, and while continually ramping up its military presence along the Ukrainian border, maintains that Ukraine is actually the one responsible for its “provocative actions.”
This is the kind of thing you’d expect a U.S. leader to step in and address…but President Joe Biden is nowhere to be seen.
