According to Chentsov, it was Ukraine that initiated the discussions, not Slovakia. He clarified that the purpose of the meeting was to address Prime Minister Fico’s threats to stop electricity supplies, rather than to discuss gas transit issues.
“Ukraine triggered the early warning mechanism on electricity supplies because of Fico’s threats to stop the supplies, not gas transit talks,” Vsevolod Chentsov said.
The Ukrainian side explained that Energy Minister German Galushchenko was unable to attend the meeting due to pressing issues in the energy sector. As an alternative, Ukraine proposed holding an online meeting to ensure that discussions could still take place despite the logistical challenges.
European Commission’s Stance
Amidst the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Slovakia, the European Commission has maintained a neutral position. A spokesperson for the EU’s Executive Arm stated, “The Commission has been ready to follow up and discuss the impacts of the end of the transit agreements with all parties concerned.” This statement indicates the EU’s willingness to facilitate further dialogue and find a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
