The presidential general election is set to occur in November 2024 and is less than four calendar months away from taking place. While four months may not seem like a lengthy period, in the political world, things can change drastically overnight and four months is still a considerable amount of time. The volatile reality of political life in the United States was demonstrated clearly over the last calendar month.
On June 27th, the former 45th president, Donald Trump, squared off against the incumbent commander-in-chief, Joe Biden, in the first presidential debate. Biden floundered, appearing incoherent and weak. Following this performance, calls were ramped up by top Democrats that Biden should drop out of the presidential race. Biden remained adamant for weeks that he would remain where he was, but eventually succumbed to the mounting political pressure on Sunday, July 22nd. Biden reached the decision while surrounded by friends, family, and close advisors at his Delaware home.
The president announced he would not be resigning from the presidency and would finish out his term but would suspend his re-election bid. Biden then immediately endorsed Kamala Harris, his Vice President, as a potential successor. Harris has raised $50 million in 24 hours following this announcement, but it remains to be seen whether or not she will be the party nominee.
This announcement comes after the Republican National Convention occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last week. The Republican party was unified and energized behind the former 45th President Donald Trump. Trump survived a harrowing assassination attempt on July 13th, just a week before Biden dropped out of the race. Miraculously, Trump survived the assassination by a matter of inches, with the bullet grazing his ear. Democrats in the media continue to attack Trump despite the near-death experience. Ana Navarro, a co-host on The View, claimed Trump’s ear bandage should have been “over his mouth” while he spoke at the RNC. She is now facing severe backlash.
