(RoyalPatriot.com )- Progressive Democrats are trying to block the United States from selling arms to Israel.
Led by ultra-progressive Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, from New York, the group on Wednesday introduced a resolution that would block the sale of arms to Israel. The deal is for $735 million.
Just like much of what AOC and her “Squad” members do, this move is mostly symbolic in nature, many political pundits say. That’s because there are many leaders in the Democratic Party who actually support the arms sale. As such, it’s very unlikely that this proposal will even see the light of day as a floor vote in the House.
What the resolution does do is show that the Squad is, yet again, railing against Israel while somehow supporting Hamas, a group of militants that the United States considers a terrorist organization.
Through a statement, AOC said:
“For decades, the U.S. has sold billions of dollars in weaponry to Israel without ever requiring them to respect basic Palestinian rights. In so doing, we have directly contributed to the death, displacement and disenfranchisement of millions.
“At a time when so many, including President Biden, support a ceasefire, we should not be sending ‘direct attack’ weaponry to Prime Minister Netanyahu to prolong this violence.”
In early May, the White House told Congress it approved the weapons deal with Israel. The weapons are almost entirely made by Boeing, and are what’s called Joint Direct Attack Munitions. These are able to turn “dumb bombs” into something that is useful — missiles that are precision-guided.
Congress has a period of review for all arms sales. For most countries, that period is 30 days. But, for Israel and other countries considered America’s close allies, that review period is half of that, or 15 days.
That review period ends this week, hence the timing of the announcement by AOC.
Before Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on Thursday afternoon, the two sides had been embroiled in two straight weeks of attacks back and forth. Hamas is in control of the Gaza Strip, and has been firing rockets into Israel for those two weeks.
Most of those rockets, which total in the thousands, were intercepted by Israel’s defense system known as the Iron Dome.
But, Israel didn’t stop at just defending incoming fire. It also initiated aerial bombings into the Gaza Strip. Most of those attacks were right on target, and as a result have caused grave damage and deaths — both for the militants and civilians.
In all, there have been in excess of 200 Palestinians killed in just these two weeks. Twelve Israelis have also been killed in the fighting.
This week, Biden has worked hard to negotiate a ceasefire between the two sides, which was finally agreed upon on Thursday.
The fighting was set to stop at 2 a.m. local time Friday, according to a senior leader from Hamas. Egypt helped broker the terms of the agreement between the two sides.
