Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley formally endorsed Donald Trump in a speech at the Republican National Convention last Tuesday.
Haley was initially not scheduled to speak at the convention in Milwaukee but received a last-minute invitation last weekend following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13.
Haley said that Trump invited her to address delegates “in the name of unity,” and said she was “happy to accept” Trump’s “gracious invitation.”
A week before the convention, Trump’s former UN ambassador released the delegates she earned during the primaries and urged them to support Trump’s nomination.
Haley said at the time that President Biden wasn’t “competent” to serve another four years in office and his vice president “would be a disaster.” She said the United States needed a president who would secure the border, reduce the national debt, restore the economy, and “hold our enemies to account.”
In speaking directly to hesitant Republican voters, Haley told the convention that Americans did not have to agree with Trump all of the time to vote for him in November. She said at this critical time in the country’s history, “we have to go with Donald Trump.”
Haley praised the former president for his policies on national security and said the American people were “well served” by Trump when he was in office, even if they didn’t always agree with him.
She called on the Republican Party not only to unite but also expand its base, explaining that the party would be “so much better when we are bigger.” Haley added that the party was “stronger” when it welcomed people from “different backgrounds and experiences.”
Haley’s speech was followed by Trump’s other Republican primary challenger, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who turned his focus on President Biden and his radical left administration.
DeSantis told the delegates that the country could not afford “four more years of a Weekend at Bernie’s presidency.”
