The Trump campaign is floating South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace as a possible running mate in 2024, despite her very vocal criticism of Trump after the January 6 riot, the UK Independent reported.
Mace, whom Donald Trump sought to defeat in the 2022 primary over her opposition to his involvement in allegedly inciting the January 6 riot, has recently been giving interviews defending Trump over the Justice Department’s indictment for his illegal retention of classified documents.
In a recent interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Mace suggested that Trump gets indicted whenever the House Oversight Committee finds further evidence of the Biden family’s corruption. Mace told host Maria Bartiromo that most Americans, whether they support Trump or not, can see that the Executive Branch has been weaponized to “take out” Biden’s political enemies.
After Mace defended Trump, pro-Trump Twitter accounts quickly shared the clip, and one Trump assistant texted Mace to thank her for defending the former president, according to Politico.
Trump campaign advisor Chris LaCivita, who previously worked as a campaign consultant for Rep. Mace, told Politico that the South Carolina Republican’s “constant and consistent” defense of Trump “has not gone unnoticed” by the Trump campaign.
But Congresswoman Mace’s office was quick to downplay the idea that Mace would be interested in sharing the ticket with Trump, insisting that she is “focused on delivering results” for her constituents and “looks forward” to a Republican winning the 2024 presidential election.
Mace’s harsh criticism of Trump after the 2020 election enraged Trump supporters and the former president.
As with the Republican House members who voted to impeach Trump in 2021, Trump and his team backed Mace’s primary challenger Katie Arrington in the 2022 South Carolina Republican primary.
Arrington lost and Mace easily won reelection.
Another name being floated as a possible running mate is failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake.
People Magazine reported last week that Lake has been “practically living” at Mar-a-Lago, spending so much time hanging around the presidential candidate that she has her own suite in Trump’s swanky estate.
