Marcee Gray, the mother of Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspected of carrying out the fatal shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, was indicted for elder abuse on Monday. According to court documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Marcee Gray was charged after authorities discovered that she allegedly tied her 73-year-old mother, Deborah Polhamus, to a chair for nearly 24 hours.
The incident reportedly took place in November 2023, when Polhamus was found bound by her wrists and ankles after a family friend was asked to check on her by one of Marcee Gray’s sisters. The discovery came after Polhamus was unreachable, leading the sister to send someone to her home in Barrow County.
The court documents indicate that the elder abuse incident occurred following a dispute between Marcee Gray and her mother. Marcee was reportedly angry after Polhamus refused to assist her in confronting her ex-husband, Colin Gray, whom she allegedly threatened to kill. During the altercation, Marcee is accused of throwing her mother against a wall, cutting her wrist, before binding her to the chair and confiscating her phone.
In addition to elder abuse, Marcee Gray faces multiple charges, including false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and exploitation of a disabled adult or elderly person. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
The latest development adds to a troubling family history, as Marcee’s son, Colt Gray, has been charged with murder following the September 4 school shooting in which two students and two teachers were killed. Colt will be tried as an adult for his role in the tragedy. His father, Colin Gray, was also arrested and faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder, as it was alleged that he had given Colt the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift.
Marcee Gray expressed remorse in a letter released after the shooting, apologizing to the victims’ families and stating that she would never forgive herself for what had happened.
