(RoyalPatriot.com )- Republican Senator Lindsey Graham voted in favor of the bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, and now his party in his home state is doing something about it.
Last week, the Aiken County Republican Party decided to censure Graham, from South Carolina, primarily because of his support for that massive spending bill.
In explaining its decision, the local party said Graham “consciously violated the platform of the South Carolina Republican Party.” They also alleged he “opened the door for additional Chinese investment in American projects,” which could heighten “the threat to our national security.”
Last Tuesday, the U.S. Senate passed the infrastructure bill by a vote of 69-30, which was enough votes to avoid the filibuster. All 50 Democrats in the Senate supported the bill, with 19 Republicans joining as well.
The legislation will in effect infuse federal money into pressing infrastructure needs throughout the U.S., including for bridge, highway and road projects. Once the bill passed through the Senate, Graham praised the legislation for the good it will do residents of his home state of South Carolina.
He said in a statement:
“The bipartisan infrastructure bill is good for South Carolina. It provides much-needed help for our roads, bridges, ports, and expands broadband internet access. I have always been supportive of infrastructure investment and wish we had passed this years ago.
“This bill provides American infrastructure with a much-needed face lift.”
Graham wasn’t the only high-profile Republican to support the bill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell threw his support — and ultimately his vote — behind it as well.
The bill was crafted by a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators, which is why it received so much support from the Republican Party when it came to a floor vote. Despite this, former President Donald Trump has said that the bill is a “disgrace.”
Before the vote, he issued a statement through his Save America PAC that said Senate Republicans should “think twice before you approve this terrible deal.”
The statement read:
“Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill is a disgrace. If Mitch McConnell was smart, which we’ve seen no evidence of, he would use the debt ceiling card to negotiate a good infrastructure package.
“This is a 2,700 page bill that no one could have possibly read — they would have needed to take speed reading courses. It is a gift to the Democrat Party, compliments of Mitch McConnell and some RINOs, who have no idea what they are doing.”
He further said this infrastructure bill “will be used against the Republican Party in the upcoming elections in 2022 and 2024,” saying “it will be very hard for me to endorse anyone foolish enough to vote in favor of this deal.”
The Aiken County Republican Party seemed to agree with Trump. In explaining its censure of Graham, the party said:
“Support of the ‘Invest in America Act’ is tantamount to supporting the Socialist Marxist agenda of the House and Senate Democrats who are using climate change as a way to force businesses and private citizens into tyrannical government compliance against our free enterprise system.
“This bill fails to address border security, sets no limits to the fiscal impact of ‘Green infrastructure,’ and dramatically degrades the rights of existing American businesses. He willfully neglected to act within the fiscal conservative agenda we elected him to diligently uphold.”
