(RoyalPatriot.com )- A retired police officer tragically died on Saturday, some three days after he protected a news crew that was reporting on a smash-and-grab story and got shot.
Kevin Nishita, who was working as an armed guard for a protection agency, was shot in broad daylight on Wednesday as KRON-TV reporters were covering an Oakland, California clothing store theft story. The crew was confronted by armed criminals, according to police reports, before Nishita stepped in to protect them.
The Colma Police Department issued a press release on Saturday describing how the man was rushed to the hospital where he received emergency medical attention. The statement said that despite the best efforts of the staff, Nishita “succumbed to his injuries this morning.”
When the armed robbers approached the journalists they reportedly attempted to steal their high-end camera equipment. Nishita’s intervention resulted in him being shot in the stomach.
A surveillance photograph of a vehicle that police officers believe was used in the fatal shooting was shared by the Oakland Police Department, and a reward of $32,500 has been made available to anybody who can provide information that leads to an arrest.
Nishita served as a Colma Police Department officer between 2012 and 2018, working as a detective, a field training officers, and later being promoted to sergeant in 2015. A popular and active member of the Colma community, he will be missed by many in the region.
