Charlotte Casiraghi, the granddaughter of Grace Kelly and niece of Prince Albert of Monaco, recently opened up about her upbringing and current life in an interview with The Telegraph. Despite her royal lineage and substantial wealth, Charlotte, who is eleventh in line to the Monégasque throne and worth an estimated $30 million, distanced herself from the idea that she lived a privileged life. She explained that she attended “normal” schools in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where students came from various social backgrounds, and insisted her education wasn’t marked by privilege.
The 38-year-old mother of two, who recently announced her divorce from film producer Dimitri Rassam, admitted that managing her background as a member of the royal family has been challenging. She shared that she often sought freedom from her royal status, preferring not to represent the Monaco Royal Family in an official capacity. Charlotte revealed that the pressures of public expectation have been difficult to navigate, which is why she values her independence.
Though she remains connected to high-profile figures such as Karl Lagerfeld and Naomi Campbell, Charlotte claimed that she doesn’t understand the public’s interest in her private life. Living outside the core responsibilities of royal duties, she said, allows her more freedom to explore her interests, including organizing health seminars and hosting literary events as part of her role as a Chanel ambassador.
In personal matters, Charlotte has reportedly moved on from her marriage to Dimitri Rassam, forming a close bond with French writer Nicolas Mathieu. This relationship was revealed following her separation from Rassam, with whom she shares two children, Raphaël and Balthazar.
Despite her separation from Dimitri, Charlotte remains active in public life, attending fashion events and fulfilling her ambassadorial role with Chanel. She continues to navigate her royal status with a desire for personal freedom, distancing herself from the spotlight that accompanies being part of one of Europe’s most famous royal families.
