Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee have opened an investigation into the rape and murder of a 21-year-old autistic woman by an accused member of the MS-13 gang who was apprehended as a teenager at the U.S.-Mexico border.
This month, the 17-year-old undocumented teenager was arrested for the July 27, 2022, crime.
On Tuesday, the Republican representatives wrote to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra expressing their concern over the suspect’s transfer to the care of his aunt rather than being detained or deported.

The Chief Medical Examiner of Aberdeen determined that she was strangled to death, and forensic evidence linked her murder to an unidentified 17-year-old gang member.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement noted that he was documented in El Salvadorian documents as an MS-13 gang member, and he was subsequently detained on January 15, 2023, in Edgewood.
Tammy Nobles, Hamilton’s mother, expressed her shock and grief at the murder of her autistic daughter and her confusion over how the culprit had gained access to her.
The Nobles wanted to know why the suspect was detained and then returned to his aunt after he was captured unlawfully crossing the border.
House Republicans, who won back their majority in the House in 2022, are looking at potential solutions to the border problem.
Biden mentioned it in his State of the Union speech, calling it a challenge shared by both parties, but Biden’s lack of action on the matter has drawn widespread criticism.
