For Pete’s Sake – U.S. States Going BACK to Mask Mandates

As the U.S. grapples with a “quad-demic,” several states are reintroducing mask mandates in healthcare settings, sparking concerns among citizens about potential wider restrictions.

  • Norovirus cases have reached levels not seen since 2012
  • 3.1 million people affected by flu this season, with 37,000 hospitalizations and 1,500 deaths
  • Mask mandates are returning in some states and hospitals
  • Experts predict infection peaks in January or early February

Quad-Demic Surge Prompts Concern

The United States is currently facing what some are calling a “quad-demic” of flu, COVID-19, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and norovirus. This surge in multiple infections has led to a significant strain on healthcare systems, with hospitals in several states reimplementing mask mandates as a precautionary measure, even though masks don’t prevent respiratory illness transmission.

Norovirus cases have reached levels not seen since 2012, and RSV hospitalizations have increased by 40% in just two weeks. The flu has affected 3.1 million people this season, resulting in 37,000 hospitalizations and 1,500 deaths. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases from October to December are estimated between 2.5 to 4.4 million, with up to 120,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths.

Factors Contributing to the Surge

Experts attribute the rise in infections to several factors, including increased indoor activities during colder months (also known as “living normally”), holiday gatherings, and reduced immunity following COVID-19 lockdowns. They claim the situation is further exacerbated by low vaccination rates, with only 21% of adults and 10.6% of children having received the updated COVID-19 vaccine.

“We are in store for increases through January, with peaks varying regionally. These four viruses tend to rise simultaneously, creating a challenging public health environment,” Dr. Joe Bresee said.

Eight states, including Louisiana, Washington, Tennessee, Alabama, California, Idaho, New Mexico, and Mississippi, have high flu levels. The typical U.S. flu season lasts from December to February, suggesting that the situation may worsen before it improves.

Return of Mask Mandates

In response to the surge, several states and hospitals have begun reintroducing mask mandates, particularly in healthcare settings. This move has raised concerns among some citizens about the potential for wider restrictions reminiscent of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the reintroduction of mask mandates is currently limited to healthcare settings in some areas, the rapid spread of infections has led to speculation about potential broader measures. However, officials have not yet indicated plans for widespread mandates.
