Federal prosecutors issued multiple subpoenas this week that are focused on the election campaign that New York City Mayor Eric Adams successfully ran in 2021.
The New York Times reported this week that those subpoenas were issued to City Hall, Adams himself as well as his election committee as part of the ongoing investigation into corruption.
Citing four different people who are knowledgeable about the ongoing issue, the subpoenas were issued last month. They request communications such as text messages, as well as other documents from election officials and the mayor himself.
Federal prosecutors also requested through the subpoenas information on travel arrangements Adams made to China as well as campaign fundraising efforts for him.
Adam’s office gave a statement to Fox News, saying they were in full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
As the deputy mayor for communications in New York City, Fabien Levy, said:
“As a former member of law enforcement, the mayor has been clear over the last nine months that he will cooperate with any investigation underway. Nothing has changed. He expects everyone to cooperate to swiftly bring this investigation to a close.”
The legal team that’s representing Adams also said they’ve evaluated and investigated all campaign documents, witness interviews and electronic communications in the case.
As attorneys Boyd Johnson III and Brendan McGuire said in a statement issued to Fox News:
“Over the past nine months, we have conducted our own investigation of the areas we understand the U.S. Attorney’s Office has been reviewing. Our investigation has included an evaluation of campaign documents, an analysis of tens of thousands of electronic communications and witness interviews.
“To be clear, we have not identified any evidence of illegal conduct by the Mayor. To the contrary, we have identified extensive evidence undermining the reported theories of federal prosecution as to the Mayor, which we have voluntarily shared with the U.S. Attorney.
“We continue to cooperate with the investigation and are in the process of responding to the recently issued subpoenas. We continue to look forward to a prompt and just resolution of this investigation.”
Federal prosecutors have been looking into Adams and his campaign for a while now. The investigation has focused on how Adams has used private email addresses as well as how some records regarding seven trips he made to China suddenly disappeared.
The New York Post has reported that one source close to the investigation said Adams used three different private email addresses to arrange his dealings in China on the seven trips he made there.
The source said that at least one of those trips was funded in part by the Chinese Communist Party.
A challenge is those private email addresses haven’t been able to be traced on the city’s government servers, which is how he was able to conceal the details of the trips — such as who paid for them and who he met with while there.
