Elon Musk’s Love-Hate Relationship With Trump, Explained

Elon Musk, a billionaire, spoke out against the former president in 2020, calling him a “stone-cold loser” and condemning his character.

An anonymous person close to Musk said that in 2016, the billionaire told his associates that he thought Trump’s triumph over Clinton was proof that we were all living in a simulation.

Musk’s recent large donation to Trump belies the fact that he had previously voiced his support for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

Following the latest assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Elon Musk wished President Trump a quick recovery and voiced his support.

Since 2016, Trump and Musk’s relationship has been complicated, and rumors have circulated that the founder of Tesla and SpaceX harbors tremendous hatred towards the former president.

President Trump appointed Musk to his tech advisory group soon after his 2016 inauguration, after Musk had already voiced his negative view about Trump’s qualifications for the presidency.

After publicly declaring his intention to not give to any candidate, Musk changed his position this week and donated to a pro-Trump PAC, drawing condemnation from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Musk has changed dramatically, going from being a Democrat who supported Barack Obama to a Trump supporter who is fiercely loyal to the president. His endorsement of Trump soon after an assassination attempt confirmed this shift, which followed a flirtation phase.

Curiously, the Trump team had considered having Musk speak at the Republican National Convention this week. On Thursday, Musk said he was not going to talk.

Musk is increasingly coming clean about his conservative leanings. His efforts to keep his contributions under wraps have meant that few people fully know about his financial support for Republicans.

His rise to prominence in the presidential race has garnered him plaudits from Trump’s advisors and envy from the Biden team.

Many Republicans have noticed Musk’s recent dramatic turnaround, which he attributes to his frustration with liberals over transgender rights, immigration, and how the Biden administration was believed to have treated Tesla.
