Chicago’s Gun Violence Claims Multiple In Bloody Weekend

The police estimate that nearly 50 individuals were shot throughout the weekend in Chicago. This included a 21-year-old mother of two who was shot in the face and murdered on Sunday.

Kanesha Gaines was reportedly among a group of women who had gathered on South Keeler Avenue in the 1500 block in the North Lawndale neighborhood at about the morning. Unidentified men emerged from a black Jeep and started shooting at the crowd.

Gaines was rushed to the hospital after receiving a bullet to the face, but he was pronounced dead.

The Chicago Police Department reports 29 shooting incidents between Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

A total of 47 individuals were shot during the violent weekend, according to police estimates released on Monday morning. The statistics included both deadly and nonfatal gunshot incidents.

Natasha Graham, the victim’s mom, told reporters that in 2019 her son was also killed; Keshaun Graham was gunned down after he had just turned 18.

She said our young people and teenagers need to be able to socialize outside of the home. Graham told the media outlet that providing kids access to outdoor play is essential. “There shouldn’t always be fights whenever a group of young adults gets together to hang out,” she argued.

In addition to Gaines, a 28-year-old woman was shot and killed in the same event. She was shot eight times in the torso and rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital. The Chicago Police Department said she was in critical condition.

Seven other people were injured or grazed by gunfire during the event. They were between the ages of 20 and 33.

No arrests had been made as of Monday morning, and authorities had not released any additional information about the suspects.
