A new AI-powered chatbot is on the prowl in the bowels of Amazon’s product search algorithms. Recently released in the US, the chatbot now additionally powers searches for products in the UK. The technology allows customers to inquire about specific products, to ask it to make comparisons, or to refer users to similar products.
Rufus is the new moniker for the AI bot. It’s available on Amazon’s mobile app, so if you want to try it out, that’s where to look. You can also ask more basic questions like ingredients for a recipe, or particular cookware required.
Generative AI like Rufus has become ubiquitous in the tech field, from Google’s Gemini to ChatGPT, and X’s Grok, the field has grown steadily with new, commercially available bots coming online at a steady pace.
The programs aren’t true artificial intelligence, instead they use machine learning algorithms to scan databases, like Amazon, Twitter, or Google, to identify patterns in language that are common which the program then “learns” and can repeat them or explain them by sharing the most common associated information.
Amazon also explained that if users aren’t satisfied with Rufus’ performance, they can easily switch back to the previous search method using a swipe on the app. The company has been using various iterations of AI technology over the years to facilitate the rapid expansion of its business and distribution of products.
The option to “ask Rufus a question” will appear in the bottom right of the app which will then give users the option to manually input a question. It will also generate several additional questions if it is unsure what is being asked and offer multiple responses to queries dependent on context.
The app will also have on-board support for voice-based input, allowing users to talk to the program instead of manually typing. Rufus can also give tailored recommendations based on users’ needs, helping them choose between technological gadgets like a new cell phone or identifying fashion trends for a new outfit.
