Widespread Disruption in Indian Skies

India’s aviation sector is grappling with an unprecedented security crisis as a series of bomb threats have targeted multiple airlines, causing widespread disruption and raising alarm among passengers and authorities alike. Over 15 days, more than 410 domestic and international flights operated by Indian carriers have received hoax bomb threats, leading to chaos and heightened security measures across airports.

The threats, primarily targeting Air India and IndiGo, have been made through social media platforms using handles with disturbing names such as “Adam Lanza Mass Shooter” and “I wanna slit your throat.” These malicious actions have not only disrupted flight schedules but have also strained airline resources and tested the readiness of security protocols.

Air India, one of the major airlines affected by these threats, has been quick to ease concerns. The airline says it has been following all prescribed security measures in response to the threats, working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of its operations.

“The safety and security of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” Air India stated.

However, the airline faced a particularly concerning incident when a live round of ammunition was discovered in the seat pocket of an Air India flight from Dubai to Delhi on October 27. This discovery further intensified the already heightened security concerns plaguing the aviation sector.

The Indian government and law enforcement agencies are taking these threats seriously. The IT Ministry has urged social media platforms to swiftly remove or disable access to misinformation related to these threats. Meanwhile, the civil aviation ministry is considering various actions to address the issue of hoax bomb threats, including potential security and legislative changes.

“It was learnt around 2.45 pm that messages were posted on X handle ‘I wanna slit your throat’ that bombs were planted inside seven flights related to the Kolkata airport,” Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria said.

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating these hoax threats. In Mumbai, police have registered a case against an unidentified person after three airlines received bomb threats on their social media handles. These investigations aim to track down the perpetrators and prevent future incidents.

The ongoing threats are having a significant impact on the Indian aviation industry. With over 500 aircraft affected and more than 100 flights receiving bomb threats on a single day (October 29), the financial implications for airlines are substantial. The increased security measures and potential flight delays or cancellations are not only costly for the airlines but also disruptive for passengers.
